The Beaujolais region is a land of plenty.
In the collective imagination, this term refers to an earthly paradise, a magical land where nature is very generous with its guests. This idea is still very present in the north of France’s culture, generally evoking France’s south west, Provence or Italy.
As you walk through the Monts du Beaujolais, also known as the Pays des Pierres Dorées (land of golden stones), you discover that there is a very particular atmosphere, from the gentle landscape to the delicious wines. With excellent food locally made, it’s not hard to see why this region is the home of so many wines and dishes. Lyon is not far either, an important city in France from a gastronomic point of view.
In this Collection, I’ve created a one-week hike that follows the route of the GR 76. The terrain is rough, especially in the second part of this 180-kilometre (112 mi) route but you’re always rewarded for your efforts. This GR goes off the beaten track and takes you along ridgelines over small mountain peaks, giving you breathtaking views in good weather.
The GR 76 starts from the small town of Chagny in Saône-et-Loire, and ends eight stages further on in the village of Affoux, located in the Rhône department. To get to the beginning of the route, Chagny is served by the railway line linking the Paris–Lyon station to the Marseille-Saint-Charles station. At the end of the route, the town of Tarare is connected by regional express trains that will take you back to Lyon.
This route is ideal for keen hikers as well as those who are taking on a long-distance walk for the first time. Take a backpack of at least 25 litres for this adventure and don't forget your waterproofs and warm clothes: we may be in the land of plenty, but you'll be hiking at heights of 800 metres (2,625 ft) and it can get cold, especially on the last four days of the trip.
Although this hike can be done in any season, spring and summer are the best times to take advantage of the good weather. In autumn, from mid-October onwards, you will have the pleasure of seeing a beautiful change of season as the vines and forests turn red and gold. September is harvest time, and it can also be a feast to walk through the vineyards and see everyone busy harvesting the future Beaujolais nouveau.
