Touring around one of Sweden's most beautiful islands on gravel roads close to the coastline with a select group of cyclists? Yes please! The Aur Gotland is a small annual gravel event and Robin and I participated for the first time last August.

Aur is the Gotland word for gravel, and this three-day route lives up to its name. We had no idea what to expect of the island, but like so many other Swedish destinations, it was a true gravel paradise. Gotland is Sweden's largest island, located in the Baltic Sea. It is a popular holiday destination for Stockholmers during the summer months. The island is known for its rocky coastline and has more than 100 nature reserves plus a national park.

In three days, we skimmed past the extraordinary limestone formations called rauken, beautiful coastline and Gotlandic sheep. We rode along singletracks through shoulder-high verge weeds and kilometres of dreamy gravel strips. Of course, the route also included plenty of hike-a-bike and the sharp stones caused a few punctures!

Getting to Gotland is easy, but it is quite a journey. We took the ferry from Oskarshamn and after three hours of sailing, we arrived in Visby in the dead of night. The medieval Hanseatic city of Visby is the best preserved of all the medieval cities in Scandinavia and has been included in the World Heritage List. Visby also has an airport, so you can fly there with a change of plane. If you come from Stockholm, take the ferry from Nynäshamn.
