With its varied nature, numerous cultural sights and excellent gastronomy, Germany’s Taunus mountain range has long since ceased to be an insider tip among cyclists. On the contrary, word has spread far and wide so that everyone can enjoy this area. There’s something for everyone, from families who appreciate relaxation, gentle ascents and traffic-free cycle paths to ambitious cyclists for whom it can't be hilly enough.
The Taunus is a low mountain range and hills and climbs abound here. With a little fitness or electronic support though, the hills quickly lose their intimidating nature. If you’d prefer flat routes, there are wonderful trails in the valleys and the Vordertaunus below the main ridge. Lying close to the big cities of the Rhine-Main-Area, the Taunus region enjoys excellent transport connections. Whether by train, car or bicycle, there are many ways to get to the Tours quickly and comfortably.
In this Collection, we present 12 of the most beautiful cycling routes in the Taunus region. For gentle and family-friendly rides, take the children on an exciting safari from zoo to zoo and on the way look out for those unusual road signs only found on this route. Or, explore the beautiful nature between the Ems and Wörsbach valleys without many hills.
If you like a blend of sporty and culture, go on a sweaty discovery tour to find traces of the Romans. Nowhere is the Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes – the edge of the Roman Empire – better preserved than in the Taunus. The historical border between the Roman Empire and the Germanic ‘barbarians’, which is over 2,000 years old, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and runs right through this low mountain range, spanning over almost 100 kilometres from west to east. In numerous places you can discover the remains of the watchtowers and impressive forts and, thanks to the information boards, learn a lot about life at the Limes.
A cycle tour in the Taunus is rounded off by a visit to the well-preserved medieval towns such as Bad Camberg, Idstein or Weilburg, to name but a few. In the shade of the impressive half-timbered buildings, you can enjoy the many cafés, restaurants and inns, fortifying yourself for the next Tour. All rides are excellently signposted and you can link them together in many places. So, get in the saddle and enjoy a bike adventure in the Taunus, the most beautiful low mountain range in the world.
