Race biking in South Tyrol

Ciclismo su strada – Raccolta by
Südtirol

Steep Alpine passes surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views, well developed bikeways through plantations and vineyards in lush valleys, easy temperatures in Spring and Fall and of course the Alpine-Mediterranean style wine taverns along the way call for your next race bike adventure in South Tyrol. Curvy roads and undisturbed wilderness way beyond 2000 meters of altitude make the Timmelsjoch, the Penserjoch, the Mendelpass, the Jaufenpass, the Sellajoch, the Stilfserjoch and the Staller Sattel prime destinations for race biking. In lower spheres, underneath the windblown mountain passes, you will find perfectly paved bikeways in the Vinschgau, Eisacktal, Burggrafenamt and the Pustertal - designed for you to go fast on them. High standard also expects you off the road as Tyrol offers you hefty local snacks and a prize-winning haute cuisine.

Along the Etschradroute Via Claudia Augusta, the ancient cultural and trade route of the Roman Empire comes to life again. A highlight for all cycling and culture enthusiasts. 2000 years ago, the Romans built the only imperial road across the Alps: the "Via Claudia Augusta". It reached from Altinum near Venice or Ostiglia on the Po over the Reschen and Fernpass to Donauwörth in Bavaria. Today, the road is a 700 km long cycle route, of which 80 km lead through the Vinschgau. From the Reschenpass the Via Claudia Augusta runs through the Adige Valley to the south of South Tyrol to Salurn. From medium to light, from paved to gravel, through wonderful forests, meadows and orchards in the lower Vinschgau, the Etschrad route offers a cultural experience between gardens and architecture. Countless sights, cultural sites, barbecues and rest stops to enjoy a refreshing stop along the Etschradroute.

The drive from Prad to the Stelvio Pass is considered a classic in the
Road racing scene. Particularly appealing are not only the 25 km and about 1,800 vertical meters, which must be covered. These are also the 48 switchbacks, which, starting from Prad via Gomagoi, Trafoi and the Franzenshöhe, raise the second highest paved mountain pass in Europe.
Close to Trafoi, the cyclist has an unrestricted view of the glacier and rock formations of the Ortler group, which will not let them go to the top of the pass.
